Update 12:01PM: To clarify, the Street View imagery for Antarctica includes panoramas of an area called Half Moon Island—such as this view of penguins and this one of the landscape. The blue dots you see throughout the continent when dragging the pegman are user-contributed photos.

We introduced Street View back in May 2007, enabling people to explore street-level imagery in five U.S. cities. We were excited to share a virtual reflection of the real world to enable armchair exploration. Since then, we've expanded our 360-degree panoramic views to many more places, allowing you to check out a restaurant before dining there, to explore a neighborhood before moving there and to find landmarks along the route of your driving directions.

Three years later, we're happy to announce that you can now explore Street View imagery on all seven continents, with the addition today of Brazil, Ireland and Antarctica. You can now see images from around the world spanning from the beaches of Brazil, to the moors of Ireland, to the icy terrain in Antarctica.

We often consider Street View to be the last zoom layer on the map, and a way to show you what a place looks like as if you were there in person—whether you're checking out a coffee shop across town or planning a vacation across the globe. We hope this new imagery will help people in Ireland, Brazil, and even the penguins of Antarctica to navigate nearby, as well as enable people around the world to learn more about these areas.

For example, as summer winds down here in Mountain View, Calif., the famous beaches of Copacabana, Brazil are an enticing virtual travel destination.

The Ring of Kerry in Ireland, with its picturesque rolling landscape, is another favorite new place in Street View.

Speaking of travel, my wife BethEllyn and I embarked on the Minerva for an expedition to Antarctica in late January. We enjoyed stunning vistas, and I found that any minute not spent on deck was a spectacular view missed. Fortunately, we'd planned to take some Street View photos, and are now able to share with you the incredible visuals from Half Moon Island, Antarctica.

Here is a group of Chinstrap penguins we saw on the island.

And this is one of my favorite views. You can see part of the crescent shape that gives the island its name.

I'm very proud of the worldwide Street View team and thrilled that everyone can now see places from all seven continents, including the amazing landscapes and natural beauty I saw in Antarctica, through the street-level images in Google Maps and Google Earth. The way Gmail organizes mail into conversations is like cilantro. You either love it -- and, like me, enjoy the nice citrusy, herbal finish it gives to everything from salsa to curry -- or you hate it. And those of you who hate it hate it enough to launch sites like nocilantro.com and ihatecilantro.com ("an anti cilantro community"), where you can hate it together.

But my fondness for cilantro pales in comparison to my love for Gmail's conversation view, or message threading. I haven't had to wade through multiple messages to follow a conversation in years. A centithread hasn't filled up the entire first page of my inbox in almost as long as I can remember. Having all the replies to an email (and replies to those replies) grouped with the original message simply makes communicating so much easier.

It turns out not everyone feels the same way. And just as an outspoken minority has banded together in unison to declare their distaste of one of nature's most delicious herbs, some of you have been very vocal about your dislike of conversation threading. So just like you can order your baja fish tacos without cilantro, you can now get Gmail served up sans conversation view. Go to the main Settings page, look for the "Conversation View" section, select the option to turn it off, and save changes. If you change your mind, you can always go back.


This feature will be rolling out over the next few days so if you don't see it immediately, check back in a bit. And once you try it out, let us know what you think.

More tools for viewing document revisions

We're happy to announce that a new revision history interface is now available in Google documents. To see it, go to File > See revision history.

In the new revision history interface, you can see what changes were made at a glance.


Click on a time stamp in the right column to see what changes were made at a given time or use the arrow keys to quickly scan through many revisions.

Changes are color-coded based on each collaborator, making it easy to tell what has been added or deleted. For example, in the screenshot below, James (whose edits are highlighted in orange) deleted and added text while bmichael61 (whose edits are highlighted in green) removed a paragraph and added a comment.

Time stamps are also improved in the new interface. We've heard requests for time to always be listed, even for very old revisions and we're listening: you can now tell afternoon edits apart from all-nighters.

The interface also batches revisions into groups of changes to make it easier to understand how a document has changed over time. To see a finer-grained list of revisions, click Show more detailed revisions.


This is just a first step for the new revision interface for Google Docs. We're looking forward to more revision improvements in the future. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Две недели назад мы объявили о запуске Живого поиска, тогда он был доступен только тем, кто вошел в свой аккаунт Google. Начиная со вчерашнего дня, Живой поиск работает для всех пользователей google.ru. Мы также продолжаем работу над поддержкой браузера Opera.

Хотелось бы дать несколько полезных советов по управлению Живым поиском с клавиатуры:

• При наборе запроса клавиша «Tab» или стрелка «вправо» дозаполняет запрос в поисковой строке. Например, чтобы выполнить поиск «погода в Самаре», можно набрать «п», затем «Tab», затем « в са» и увидеть результат;
  
• Между пятью топ-подсказками можно переключаться клавишами «вверх»-«вниз». Для того же запроса «погода в Самаре» можно набрать «погода в», затем клавишей «вниз» перейти к нужному запросу;
  
• И самое интересное - если начать переходить между топ-подсказками стрелочками «вверх»-«вниз», то нажатие клавиши «вправо» приведет к переходу на первый результат текущего запроса. Т.е. если набрать «погода в са», нажать стрелочку «вниз», а затем стрелочку «вправо», то вы перейдете на страницу, сответствующую первому результату запроса «погода в самаре».
  

Исходя из этого, самый быстрый способ поиска погоды в Самаре будет следующий: набрать «п», затем «Tab» (или стрелка «вправо»), затем « в», затем пару раз стрелку «вниз», затем стрелку «вправо».

Надеюсь, эти советы помогут сделать поиск еще быстрее и приятнее.

Import your files many different ways

A spreadsheet without data and numbers in it can get pretty lonely, which is why it's important to be able to easily import files full of data. Today we've improved the import dialogue to give you a full range of options of where to put that data. You can get to the new Import dialog from the File menu.

For example, when importing a .csv file, you can create a whole new spreadsheet, append to the current sheet, add a new sheet to your existing spreadsheet or even replace your entire spreadsheet with this new version.

Now with the new custom delimiters option, you can also specify what character to parse your data file with, giving you maximum flexibility when dealing with your data files.

And finally we spruced up the dialog with a preview pane giving you a first glimpse to see how your imported data will look in your spreadsheet so you can make any changes if necessary.

Стабильная версия Google Chrome Frame

Google Chrome Frame: Stable and Speedy

Today, we're very happy to take the Beta tag off of Google Chrome Frame and promote it to the Stable channel. This stable channel release provides our most polished version of Google Chrome Frame to date, allowing users to access modern web technologies like HTML5 on legacy browsers. You now can download the stable version of Google Chrome Frame and users of the Beta will be automatically updated to it in the days ahead. If you're an IT administrator, we've also posted an MSI installer for deploying Google Chrome Frame in your network.

When Google Chrome Frame went into beta in June, the team set aggressive goals for speed and stability before delivering a stable channel release. We wanted it to start much faster and to reduce crashes by an order of magnitude. After months of polishing, Google Chrome Frame now starts three times faster on Windows Vista and Windows 7 and the most common conflicts with other plug-ins have been fixed.

Thanks in part to how simple it is to enable rendering with Google Chrome Frame, sites like DeviantART, Hootsuite, and github have added support, and Ruby on Rails is making a better-performing, more standards compliant experience the default for all users of Rails apps. Google applications like Orkut, Google Docs, and YouTube have already begun adding Google Chrome Frame support. Gmail and Google Calendar are planning to adopt Google Chrome Frame in the near future to improve performance and ease the transition for users as they drop support for legacy browsers.



A stable release is just the beginning for Google Chrome Frame. We've set aggressive goals for future releases: we're working on making start-up speed even faster and removing the current requirement for administrator rights to install the plug-in. Expect more improvements and features in the near future, as we plan to release on the same schedule as Google Chrome.

We would not have made it this far without strong community support and feedback. The users and contributors to the preview versions have helped improve and shape the product in huge ways. If you'd like to get involved or just see what's coming soon, you can subscribe to the new beta channel or if you are adventurous, try the dev channel to experience the very latest. The whole team continues to listen to your feedback through our project forum and we look forward to working with you to improve Google Chrome Frame even further.
