Google has long believed that users should be able to export their data and use it with whichever service they choose. For years, the Gmail service has supported standard API protocols like POP and IMAP at no extra cost to our users. These efforts are consistent with our broader data liberation efforts.

In addition to making it easier for users to export their data, we also enable them to authorize third party (non-Google developed) applications and websites to access their data at Google. One of the more common examples is allowing a social network to access your address book in order to send invitations to your friends.

While it is possible for a user to authorize this access by disclosing their Google Account password to the third party app, it is more secure for the app developer to use the industry standard protocol called OAuth which enables the user to give their consent for specific access without sharing their password. Most Google APIs support this OAuth standard, and starting today it is also available for the IMAP/SMTP feature of Gmail.

The feature is available in Google Code Labs and we have provided a site with documentation and sample code. In addition, Google has begun working with other companies like Yahoo and Mozilla on a formal Internet standard for using OAuth with IMAP/SMTP (learn more at the OAuth for IMAP mailing list).

One of the first companies using this feature is Syphir, in their SmartPush application for the iPhone, as shown in the screenshots below. Unlike other push apps, Sypher's SmartPush application never sees or stores the user's Gmail password thanks to this new OAuth support.



We look forward to finalizing an Internet standard for using OAuth with IMAP/SMTP, and working with IMAP/SMTP mail clients to add that support.

This release fixes two issues:

Beta Update: Finally a Chrome 5 Beta for Windows

Google Chrome 5.0.342.8 has been released to the Beta channel on Windows.


There's not much to report because most of the features were released previously in Chrome 4.1. This release does have an option in the Under the Hood section to let you disable automatic translations.


Now that all Beta users are on the same revision, we can disclose the following security issues fixed in this release:

Мы запустили карты мира на русском языке. Теперь при просмотре карт на maps.google.ru вы увидите названия географических объектов не только на языке оригинала, но и на русском. К примеру, вы можете посмотреть подробную карту Кардифа:



Мы перевели на русский язык названия практически всех населенных пунктов мира, названия основных достопримечательностей и детальные карты тех мест, где говорят на английском, испанском, французском или немецком языках.



Когда хватает места, мы показываем оба названия – и на русском, и на языке оригинала, но на маленьких извилистых улочках предпочтение отдается русскому. Если вы знаете язык той страны, карту которой вы смотрите, то всегда можно переключиться на maps.google.com – там названия остались в оригинальном виде.



Как вы понимаете, нам нужно было обработать миллионы географических названий – и, как это обычно бывает в Google, мы воспользовались технологиями, а не "ручным" переводом. Для этого была создана довольно сложная система машинного обучения, которая и обрабатывала данные. Она не идеальна, и спустя сутки после запуска мы нашли несколько ошибок. Например, название 'Georgia' было абсолютно точно переведено для страны - 'Грузия', но не для одноименного штата США, который система ошибочно назвала Грузия, а не Джорджия. Мы продолжаем работать над улучшением нашей системы, и надеемся, что подобных ошибок в ближайшем будущем не останется.

Collaborative bookmarking with lists

Earlier this month we added stars in search so that you can easily mark and rediscover your favorite websites. Today we're debuting lists in Google Bookmarks, an experimental new feature that helps you easily share those sites with friends.

Bookmarks are a great way to keep track of your favorite content across the web and we want to help you share them with your friends. To use lists, visit Google Bookmarks at google.com/bookmarks or by clicking "Manage all" in your Google Toolbar. From there, select the links you want to share and click "Copy to list." Lists are private by default, but once you've created one you can share it with specific friends or even publish it to the web. For example, if a friend of yours is visiting Seattle for the first time and you have some local attractions bookmarked, you might want to create a new list for "Seattle attractions" and share it with your friend.


Sharing lists can help you collaborate with your friends on common interests or activities. Let's say you're planning a group trip to Paris. With a list, everyone can contribute useful links and resources, such as packing lists, hotel links, flight information and attractions. You could also create lists for your favorite hobbies, and then share them with friends who share your interests. Lists dynamically generate previews for many pages so you can get a sense of the site before clicking.

Lists also help you discover new web content. For example, once you've created your list of favorite Seattle attractions, Google will algorithmically analyze your list to identify other potentially relevant links, such as the Seattle Aquarium. Similarly, when we detect that a list is relevant to a specific region, we provide a map of those places and relevant info for each place, such as addresses, hours and reviews.


We're launching lists as an experimental feature so that we can quickly test it out and get feedback. Visit Google Bookmarks on google.com in English to try it out and let us know what you think. You can also learn more about lists in our Help Center.

EDIT 23-Mar-10 (mal): Remove "[33572] Medium HTTP headers processed before SafeBrowsing check" from security issues fixed. This is not fixed in this release.

The stable channel has been updated to 4.1.249.1036 for Windows, and includes the following features and security fixes (since 4.0):

• Translate infobar.
• Privacy features: content settings (cookies, images, JavaScript, plug-ins, pop-ups).
• Disabling experimental new anti-reflected-XSS feature called "XSS Auditor". The feature is still experimental, and we're disabling it while we look into some serious performance issues in rare cases. Please see this post for more details about what the XSS Auditor is.

The Google Apps team here in New York City is a hotbed of movie fanatics. But while planning a recent movie night, we realized we spend too much time organizing our events and not enough time discussing, debating and watching movies.

To take the hard work out of planning, we turned to Google Apps Script, which lets you write short programs that automatically perform simple actions within a spreadsheet. For example, our Movie Night script figures out which movies are playing close by and invites everyone to vote on what they'd most like to see.


Google Apps Script has been available to Google Apps customers since January, and today we're excited to bring it to everyone who uses Google spreadsheets. Apps Script can be helpful for all kinds of things, from customized party invites to sending out holiday letters — in fact Apps Script can be especially helpful for those repetitive, time consuming tasks.

To help you find useful scripts, we've also launched a public gallery where you can check out our Movie Night script and browse other available scripts. If you're feeling adventurous, try your hand at writing your own script and submit it to the gallery for others to use. To see the gallery or install a script in your spreadsheet, click on "Insert" and select "Script."

The future of productivity applications is in the cloud. We've always believed the web is the best platform for creating and sharing information, and Google Docs has already helped millions of people become more productive. But we recognize that many people are still accustomed to desktop software. So as we continue to improve Google Docs and Google Sites as rich collaboration tools, we're also making it easier for people to transition to the cloud, and interoperate with desktop applications like Microsoft Office.

For example, we recently made it possible to use Google Docs to store and share any type of file that you have on your computer, not just the ones you create online. Today we're excited to announce another step towards seamless interoperability: we have acquired DocVerse.

DocVerse is a small, nimble team of talented developers who share our vision, and they've enabled true collaboration right within Microsoft Office. With DocVerse, people can begin to experience some of the benefits of web-based collaboration using the traditional Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint desktop applications.

A huge "welcome" to the DocVerse team and their customers! Current DocVerse users can keep using the product as usual, though we've suspended new sign-ups until we're ready to share what's next. Stay tuned!

Для этого мы разработали Безопасный поиск — функцию, которая позволяет вам отсеивать неприемлемые веб-сайты и изображения из результатов поиска. Конечно, ни один фильтр не совершенен. Безопасный поиск позволяет вам избегать контента, который вы предпочитаете не видеть или не хотите, чтобы на него случайно наткнулись ваши дети. Мы считаем, что эта функция уже работает достаточно хорошо, и мы постоянно ищем новые варианты для ее развития.

Сегодня мы объявляем о новой возможности, которая позволяет установить «замок» на строгую фильтрацию в безопасном поиске на русском языке. При активации защиты настроек безопасности поиска вам потребуется ввести ваш пароль, после чего внешний вид страницы с результатами поиска будет заметно отличаться от обычного:



Теперь даже находясь в другом конце комнаты, вы сможете убедиться, что Безопасный поиск активирован в то время, когда ваш ребенок сидит за компьютером. Если же вы не увидите цветные шарики в правом углу страницы, можно будет легко проверить защиту и установить ее повторно.

SearchWiki в поиске Google заменят звездочками

Google сообщил в официальном блоге о замене SearchWiki в поиске звездочками. Данное изменение будет доступно всем подписчикам в ближайшие несколько дней. Звездочки синхронизируются с Google Bookmarks и Google Toolbar. Закладки теперь можно создавать прямо из поиска, отметив нужный результат звездочкой справа (к сожалению, такое добавление в закладки не предусматривает возможности выбора ярлыка и добавления комментария). Отмеченные ранее звездочками пункты будут появляться в специальном списке в верхней части страницы результатов поиска в случае релевантности их текущему поисковому запросу. Полезные функции SearchWiki добавления страниц в результаты поиска, удаления из результатов, а также комментирования теперь станут недоступными.

Stars make search more personal

We've long believed that personalization makes search more relevant and fun. For nearly five years, we've been tailoring results with personalized search. Today we're announcing a new feature in search that makes it easier for you to mark and rediscover your favorite web content — stars.

With stars, you can simply click the star marker on any search result or map and the next time you perform a search, that item will appear in a special list right at the top of your results when relevant. That means if you star the official websites for your favorite football teams, you might see those results right at the top of your next search for [nfl]. Here's what the new "Starred results" feature looks like:


The great thing about stars is that you don't have to keep track of them. You don't even have to remember whether or not you starred something. Simply perform a search and you'll rediscover your starred items right when you need them. Stars sync with your Google Bookmarks and the Google Toolbar, so you can always see your list of starred items in one place and easily organize them. Even beyond the results page, while browsing the web you can quickly click the star icon in Toolbar to create a bookmark, and those pages will start showing up in the new stars feature.

Stars in search replace SearchWiki. In our testing, we learned that people really liked the idea of marking a website for future reference, but they didn't like changing the order of Google's organic search results. With stars, we've created a lightweight and flexible way for people to mark and rediscover web content. For people who like annotations, we have Sidewiki, a more powerful way for people to contribute and discover helpful information next to pages across the Internet. All your existing SearchWiki edits will be preserved with your Google Account. You can learn more on our help center.

Stars in search are rolling out in the next couple days and will be available globally for all signed-in users.
